FAQ's
What activities do you run?
We offer Mountain Biking; Coasteering; Surfing; Kayaking; Rock Climbing and Abseiling. Through external providers we also offer Sailing and Kite surfing.
How old must you be to take part?
We generally accept children from School Year 1, however, we reserve the right to modify activities as our instructors see fit to comply with the age group and capabilities of the group.
Can I book on the day?
No, all courses must be booked in advance.
Is it safe?
Adventure activities carry an element of risk simply by the fact we are involved in the natural environment which is constantly changing. However, all our activities (on and off site) are taught and supervised by fully qualified instructors with proven experience and sound judgement and who have the ability to pitch the activity at a level that is suitable for the group.
Are the instructors qualified?
All instructors are qualified with national governing body awards where appropriate. Where no governing body exists, staff are trained and assessed in house to stringent operating procedures. All staff will also hold first aid certificates and life saving qualifications where necessary.
How fit do I have to be to take part in activities?
Providing you can climb up your stairs without breathlessness and with relative ease you will be fit enough take part in our activities. Before participating in activities, you will be required to complete our Medical Declaration. However, should you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to call us and discuss the matter in more detail.
Am I insured to take part in your activities?
Newgale YMCA OEC has public liability insurance up to £10 million. Please ask your insurer for details of personal cover required for taking part in outdoor activities if you so desire.
What happens if there is bad weather?
In most cases, the activity will be adapted in such a way that it will be safe to run, such as using a different, sheltered location or changing an activity that best suits the conditions. Where activities have to be cancelled, an alternative indoor activity may be used.
How far away are the sites you use for the activities?
Unless otherwise stated, all our designated activity sites are 10-20 minutes drive away from the centre.
Can participate if I have no prior experience of the activity?
Yes you can. All our activity sessions are geared towards beginner level and our experienced instructors are able to pitch the tuition and activity at the right level for the group as a whole.
Can I wear my own wetsuit/kit?
All kit and safety equipment will be provided by the centre. This way our instructors can ensure you are appropriately dressed for the activity and that the safety kit is suitable. Our kit and equipment undergoes rigorous and regular checks.
Can I hire equipment?
No, all equipment is used solely for our group activity sessions.
